Dear *{{First Name}}*

Back in 2000, I immigrated to the United States from the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a child, it was a scary time for me and my family. I will never forget the day we arrived in the US with just a few suitcases and a dream for a better life. Soon after we settled, my family learned English through the generosity of volunteers and nonprofit organizations like English for New Bostonians. As a result, I know firsthand, the power of philanthropy and how it affects lives. For immigrants, English classes are a game changer… becoming proficient in English can change one’s trajectory and path to success!

Now, twenty years later, I am “paying it forward” as I currently serve as the board president of English for New Bostonians and together, we are able to help new immigrants like Splendide and Guelord, who are currently studying English together at the Jamaica Plain Community Centers Adult Learning Program, an ENB funded program.

Splendide and Guelord remind me of my family...immigrants from the Congo. They came to the US seeking jobs and better opportunities. The couple currently resides in Dorchester with their three beautiful girls, ages three, five and seven.

Listen to Guelord, Splendide and other students describe how learning English is helping them through the pandemic.

As limited English speakers, life during the pandemic has been extremely difficult for them but, I am proud to report that they are resilient. Guelord lost hours at his restaurant job and is now driving for Amazon. By day, the girls are attending school remotely. By night, Guelord and Splendide settle in for their own class time, committed to building their family’s future.

“This year has been difficult for us. The children are at home and its hard with money and it’s difficult to work and teach kids at home…but I have goals for my family. I want my daughters to have a future, go to college, buy a house and grow up to have the best life possible.” -- Guelord.

As the holiday season approaches, I ask that you make a gift to ENB and help us ensure that English classes remain free and accessible for immigrants like Splendide and Guelord. Help them stay informed, safe, and on the path to self-sufficiency.

Finally, I ask that you keep all immigrant communities in your hearts as many of them serve as front line service workers and live in areas with high infection rates.

Please have a safe and healthy holiday season with your loved ones.
