From Possibility to Opportunity: Creating “Ah-Ha” Moments Through Career Coaching

For many adult English learners, entering or advancing in the workforce can feel overwhelming. Beyond learning a new language, students are often navigating an unfamiliar culture, adapting their professional experiences to the U.S. job market, and rebuilding confidence in their abilities. Through ENB’s ESOL Multilingual Career Coaching Program, students receive personalized guidance, practical tools, and encouragement to help them recognize their strengths and pursue meaningful career opportunities.

From the perspective of ENB’s ESOL Bilingual Career Coach:

Ivan Jusino has been with English for New Bostonians (ENB) for nearly three years. One of the most inspiring parts of his work is witnessing students experience their “ah-ha” moments — the realization that greater opportunities are possible beyond their current situations.

Ivan highlights the benefits and importance of working closely with students to create individualized plans and to explore different pathways toward their goals. Together, they identify students’ existing skills, experiences, and resources, and discuss how those strengths can help them move from where they are now to where they want to be.

How does coaching help students enter the workforce?

ENB students face challenges such as navigating U.S. workplace culture, communicating confidently in English, and understanding the job application process. Career coaches help students learn how to market themselves through resumes, prepare for interviews, improve professional communication skills, and better understand workplace expectations in the United States.

ENB’s ESOL Multilingual Career Coach team — including Ivan Jusino, Wilfrix Cherazard, and Tamara Mesquita — reaches students in two ways. Coaches first provide workshops within ESOL classes, introducing students to career readiness topics and workforce resources. Interested students can then sign up for individualized one-on-one coaching sessions for more personalized support.

“The time that I spent coaching helped me a lot. I was able to learn how to build a good resume and sell myself, be prepared for a job interview and pass it. I sent out applications. I passed the interview and got a job at a factory in Lowell which is MASIS Staffing (PGI Foods), where we package pre-cook foods for the airline. I get a full-time job paying $19/H with Health benefits. I would like to thank the coach because he was so patient with me. I continue to go to my English class to get good English so I can reach my goal of going back to school and continuing with my degree in Chemistry.” Mamadou A. B.

To date, 394 students have participated in the coaching program.

Through personalized guidance and encouragement, ENB’s ESOL Bilingual Career Coaching Program continues to empower immigrant adults to pursue meaningful employment opportunities and long-term career goals. By helping students build confidence, strengthen workplace skills, and navigate the U.S. job market, ENB is supporting individuals not only in finding jobs, but in creating pathways toward economic mobility and brighter futures for themselves and their families.

In response to the increasing attacks on immigrant communities, our career coaches are prepared to provide a safe space for students to share their concerns and to receive support. When emotional and legal assistance is needed, students will be referred to trusted partner organizations that are equipped to provide specialized support and resources.
